The four inputs
Sales velocity multiplies three things that create revenue, then divides by the one that slows it down. The three are the number of qualified opportunities in the pipeline, your win rate and your average deal size. The one that slows it down is the length of your sales cycle, usually counted in days. The result is an estimate of revenue per day. It's most useful for comparing the same team over time, or segments within a team, using the same definitions each time.
How to calculate it
Sales velocity = (qualified opportunities × win rate × average deal size) ÷ sales cycle length in days
Worked example: A team has 50 qualified opportunities, a 20% win rate, an average deal size of $12,000 and a 60-day sales cycle. Velocity is (50 × 0.20 × $12,000) ÷ 60 = $2,000 of revenue per day.

Work out your win rate in the cold call calculatorExample
A manager compares velocity for two segments. Small-business deals close quickly but are small; enterprise deals are large but take months, and the cycle keeps stretching at the security review. The team starts asking about the buyer's paper process during discovery, so that review starts earlier.
Why it matters
Velocity shows which lever will make the biggest difference. A team can grow revenue by creating more opportunities, winning a larger share of them, winning bigger deals or closing them faster, and each of those needs different work. Because the inputs multiply, a modest improvement in two of them can matter more than a big push on one. Velocity also exposes trade-offs. A discount that speeds up a deal but lowers its value can leave velocity where it was.
Where call skills come in
Three of the four inputs depend heavily on what happens in conversations. Better discovery raises win rate and deal size; a clear, agreed plan with dates shortens the cycle. Practice the conversations that move each input: qualifying early so deals that will never close leave the pipeline, asking for access to the economic buyer, and proposing dated next steps at the end of every call.
