What it measures
Connect rate is the first number in the cold calling funnel. It counts how often a dial results in a live conversation. Teams define 'connect' slightly differently: some count any live answer, including gatekeepers, while others only count conversations with the intended contact. Pick one definition and use it consistently, because the two can give very different numbers.
How to calculate it
Connect rate = live conversations ÷ total dials × 100
Worked example: A rep makes 120 dials in a day and reaches a live person 9 times. Her connect rate is 9 ÷ 120 × 100 = 7.5%.

Run your own numbers in the cold call calculatorExample
A team switches from calling switchboard numbers to verified direct-dial numbers and moves its call blocks from mid-afternoon to early morning. Its connect rate rises, so each rep needs fewer dials to reach the same number of conversations.
Why it matters
Connect rate tells you how many dials you need for a given number of conversations, which is the basis for planning daily activity. It's affected more by data and timing than by talking skill: the quality of the phone numbers, whether they are direct lines or switchboards, the time of day you call and the dialer you use. If connect rate is low, fix the list and the timing before blaming the reps. Track it by list source and time of day so you can see which changes actually help.
Making connects count
Because live conversations are scarce, each one is valuable. The number a rep's skill really affects is the next one in the funnel: how many conversations turn into meetings. Practice your opener, your reason for calling and your handling of the common brush-offs, so that when a call does connect you're ready for it, rather than warming up on real prospects.
